Macedonian Kingdom, Amphipolis. Alexander III the Great. 336-323 B.C. AR drachm (17.3 mm, 4.11 g, 11 h). lifetime issue under Antipater. Amphipolis mint, Struck ca. 325-323 B.C. Head of young Alexander as Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress, paws tied beneath chin / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡ[ΟΥ], name vertically downwards to right of Zeus Aetophoros seated left, legs parallel, holding eagle and resting on scepter; in field, bucranium. Price 94A; Troxell, Studies , group E8, 171 = Geissener Münzhandlung 44, lot 221 (same rev. die). Near VF, gray toning, porous surfaces. Extremely rare, probably one of only two known.
CNG writes in acsearch of the specimen it sold:"This (the CNG specimen) is the second known example of this issue, with the Hersh specimen (this one, apparently) being the other. It appears in Price that there are two examples, one in Hersh and a specimen in Gorny 44, but these refer to the same coin. Troxell's group E is significant, as it was the transitional phase where the Eagle reverse type was replaced on the drachms with the Zeus type. Both reverse types were struck during this phase, with companion types bearing the same reverse control markings.(parenthetical comments from cataloger)
