				Lot 23-254. Roman Pilgrim's Token
				Roman Pilgrim's Token
A Late Roman / Byzantine pilgrim’s token depicting Saint Symeon the Stylite, Syria, c. 5th - 6th Century AD, with ladder at side and crowned by angels at his side. The Simeon the Stylite expressed his religious fervor by ascending a pillar at a site called the ‘Wondrous Mountain’, eleven miles west of Antioch in Syria. Ascetic monks like Symeon, known as "stylites," resided on the top of tall pillars—where they were exposed to rain, snow, and wind—as a way to disengage from the sinful world. The men attracted a number of pilgrims, as evidenced by the numerous surviving tokens featuring images of stylites and Saint Symeon himself. Dia: 16mm. Intact with a crisp impression.
Ex Los Angeles private collection.
